Below are the six gaps left by Medicare that are covered by the standardized Medicare Supplement Plan F. When you have this Medigap plan, the out-of-pocket expenses for these gaps are completely covered, aside from the monthly premiums paid to the insurance company.

1.  Basic benefits:

  • Part B co-insurance (Generally 20% of all outpatient expenses)
  • Coverage for deductible on blood use
  • Hospital co-insurance
  • 365 additional days of hospital coverage

2.  Co-insurance for skilled nursing
3.  Deductible for Medicare Part A
4.  Deductible for Medicare Part B
5.  Any Medicare Part B excess charges (which left uncovered can make bill 15% more!)
6.  Foreign travel emergency coverage

Example of how Medicare Supplement Plan F works

Emma applies for a Medicare Supplement Plan F and is approved. Unfortunately several months later she starts having severe knee pain and decides to see her doctor.   Through the examination process Emma learns that she is a candidate for a total knee replacement. She has the knee surgery at her local hospital, staying in the hospital a couple of days.  After her hospital stay Emma also has several visits with her doctor following up on her surgery.  The total cost for Emma’s surgery, hospital stay, and follow-up care is $55,000.

To cover the medical bill, Medicare kicks in and pays its share and then sends the remaining portion (around $11,000) to Emma’s Medicare Supplement Plan F insurance provider. The insurance company pays off the entire bill leaving Emma nothing to do but get well.  The only expense  Emma has is the monthly premium that she pays for her Medicare Supplement Plan F and any monthly premium and copay for her Medicare Part D drug coverage.

Emma is very happy that she purchased a Medicare Supplement Plan F and feels secure knowing that it is guaranteed renewable.

Medicare supplement plans comparison

With Medicare Supplement Plan F you get the most complete Medigap coverage available. This plan covers costs including charges in excess of Medicare-approved amounts. The only other plan that covers excess charges is Medicare Supplement Plan G, but plan G does not cover the yearly Medicare Part B deductible. Because the coverage for plan G is so similar it is worth considering plan G.  Some people have found that after comparing Medicare Supplement Plan F rates with plan G and subtracting the cost of the Part B deductible, they can save $100 or $200 per year even after paying the Part B deductible.

In some states there may be a plan F high-deductible option available.  If you choose the high-deductible option on a Medicare Supplement Plan F, you will have to pay the deductible of over $2,000 before your insurance company will pay anything towards your medical bills.  The amount set for the deductible can change from year to year.

When conducting a Medicare supplement plans comparison, it is important to know that all plans are standardized by the government.  This means that AARP Medicare supplement plan F, Aflac Medicare supplement plan F, and American Continental Medicare supplement plan F all must by law provide the same level of coverage.  This makes is a lot easier to compare.  As stated earlier, this website is owned by Centaur Medicare Solutions LLC. and unlike many websites on the Internet will not give your information out to multiple insurance companies and agents.  So, if you are shopping for a Medicare supplement and would like to have an agent email you quotes for the insurance companies selling in your area without the hassle of being contacted bunches of agents, please click here.  Medigap Quotes
